Founder's Story !

Welcome to Kommune, where our journey began with a little bit of tech, a dash of curiosity, and a lot of heart!

We’re Vijay and Shafi, two tech geeks turned café aficionados. After spending years in the IT trenches, we decided to trade in our keyboards for coffee machines. Why? Because we craved a faster feedback loop! You see, in IT, if something goes wrong, you debug. In a cafe, if something goes wrong, you simply add more cinnamon :)

Shafi hails from the sunny shores of Vizag but found himself navigating the bustling streets of Bangalore for work. I, Vijay, made a similar leap from the serene backwaters of Cochin to the IT jungle of Bangalore, where I racked up 16 years of tech wizardry. We both left our techie comforts behind to dive into a new world where feedback comes with a side of espresso.

Before our cafe dreams took shape, Shafi and I had a knack for bringing people together. We once pranked new hires at our corporate jobs to pay up for their welcome party by booking a venue at Indiranagar. We also hosted invite-only house parties, arranging food and drinks for our colleagues, and were hailed for our efforts. This camaraderie was probably one of the reasons we teamed up when the opportunity knocked on our door in the form of Cafe Kommune.

Our passion for the dining experience fueled the vision for Kommune. We’ve always been the kind of people who remember the little details—a chatty server who’s more like a friend, or a thoughtful recommendation that turns a meal into a moment. It’s these experiences that inspired us to create Cafe Kommune.

And coffee? Oh, coffee is our second love. We discovered that finding good single-origin coffee in India is like searching for a unicorn. My quest led me to the lush landscapes of Coorg and Kerala, where I met some amazing bean suppliers who were more than happy to supply us with specialty coffee beans. Talk about a caffeine high!

We’re not just creating a cafe; we’re building a community space in Goa, a place that feels like home. And we’re doing it with our families by our side. Shafi’s got his hands full with his wife Reshma and their car-crazy son Ayaansh, while I’m happily navigating fatherhood with my two daughter's Amaya & Anika alone with my wife Roshni, who’s busy balancing work and our family life.
